How a Random Earbud Moment Changed How I Make Music
I don’t have any personal connection to Kelly Boesch—I just love the music she makes, and I’m deeply grateful she inspired me to discover a whole new way to collaborate with AI.
Let me explain.
I work full-time from a little cubicle at the U.S. Coast Guard Community Services Command Headquarters. The work I do takes a lot of focus, so even though my co-workers are respectful and mostly quiet, I usually pop in my noise-canceling earbuds.
Most days, I’m listening to house beats like Lane 8 or Tycho. Other days, I need vocals—Robbie Williams, Keb’ Mo’, and yes, Kelly Boesch. After adding a few of her tracks to my YouTube Music work playlist, she quickly became a favorite. The lyrics and production are awesome.
I normally keep the video tab closed while working, but one day I happened to look at one of her music videos and was blown away. It was stunning art moved by music, and vice versa.
Then it dawned on me: If these music videos are generated with AI, is the music generated too?
Turns out, it is. On her LinkedIn page, she credits one of her videos with: “Lyrics written by me, Kelly Boesch. Music created under my creative direction with assistance from Suno.”
Curious, I checked out the Suno website to learn more. They describe their mission best:
“Music is who we are. Suno is a music company building the world’s first creative entertainment platform. We believe the future of music will be more participatory than ever before and that Suno can bring the joy of musical expression to everyone, everywhere.”
To be clear, I have no affiliation with Suno other than becoming a subscriber. But subscribing genuinely changed my creative life.
Over the years, I’ve had long stretches where I wrote tons of songs. I’ve recorded a few of them on digital multitrack software, and others live on the acoustic piano in my living room, captured as quick iPhone voice notes. Digging through my archives, I found dozens of finished mixes and even more raw multi-track stems.
The sheer joy I’m feeling right now is that, using Suno, I can recreate and massively elevate those old recordings. I can take old instrumental tracks and write new lyrics, or sing a rough line and let AI help build a full performance around it. Without the pressure or limits of my own live performance skills, I can write and produce commercial-quality tracks that are actually ready to stream.
Some of the new tracks—stay tuned!
